Bare Body

NakedAndNudeNakedAndNude1DAG Modern is exhibiting the body in Indian art, with works by over 50 Indian Modernists through February 27, 2016. From their press release: “The exhibition showcases the wide presence of the bare body in Indian art.”

Of particular note is a work by Vishwanath Nageshkar, c.1950s (bottom).

LE once asked Gloria Steinem, the American feminist, where women get their power from? She said “from their body and from each other.”

Standing next to Nageshkar’s painting belies Ms. Steinem’s view, as the work points to the spirit that has gone out of the bodies, resulting in dis-empowered women but a powerful painting.
