Opportunity Nation Summit

Dr. Rick Warren, the prominent evangelical minister, spoke at the Opportunity Nation Summit today at Columbia University in NYC.

According to the press release: “Opportunity Nation is a broad-based, cross-partisan coalition of nearly 200 public, private, non-profit, civilian and military organizations. It envisions an America where every citizen that works hard can achieve their full potential. The diverse group of organizations have joined together to collectively create and advocate for an agenda that provides better skills, quality jobs, and stronger communities to all Americans.”

In his remarks, Dr. Warren suggested that businesses, government, churches and schools need to work together to rebuild the “American Dream” — with its promise of upward mobility and prosperity. In addressing the depressed job market, he said “regulations kill growth and creativity,” and therefore “free enterprise should be released without restrictions.” He also believes that immigration is a problem, adding to the “surplus of unskilled labor” in the U.S.

Commentary: Where has Dr. Warren been? The experience of the last 30 years in American society has demonstrated that ‘deregulation’ and unfettered ‘animal spirits’ are not a good thing. Immigration, on the other hand, is a good thing — a wellspring of new life, in most cases, that can help the country to be renewed.
